1709202832 ART-BASED RESEARCH: A/R/TOGRAPHIC AWAKENING

This study aims to reveal the a/r/tographic research experiences of the students enrolled in the “A/r/tography” course within the graduate education program of Fine Arts Education and to examine the visual and artistic works created by the researchers through different identities as a living inquiry. This study draws on a/r/t/ography method, which is an art-based research method. The participants are four students who previously attended the “A/r/tography” within the graduate education program of Fine Arts Education in the 2021-2022 fall semester. Participation in this study was voluntary and kept anonymous. The identities of the participants were coded. In order to obtain in-depth information, this study utilized the homework papers prepared by the students for the a/r/tography course, the photographs taken, artistic works and diaries kept by a/r/tographs as data collection tools. The data collection process took 10 weeks during the a/r/tography course. The research data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method and four main themes identified, which are “Social Adoption, The Power of Reflections, Details and Emotions.” During the research process, the students were expected to reflect their artist, researcher and teacher identities. The practical part of the research started by taking photographs. The process continued with individual questioning, and was expected to yield rhizome connections. In this regard, as for the themes, in the theme of social adoption, the photographs taken emphasized that the society took many subjects for granted, and a bust was created with the metaphor of crumpled newsprint to represent current issues. In the theme of reflection, the bridge metaphor was utilized to establishing a connection between the past and the present with selfies. In the theme of details, the subject of arts and details was discussed through a questioning based on the question “Why are there details?” Lastly, in the theme of emotions, the focus was on the emotions in the photographs, based on the notion that “Emotion is a method for me.” This study started as an a/r/tographic awakening and questioning, and evolved into an artistic work.
