Abstract

By their nature, artists are both influenced by the dynamics of the society in which they live and affect the lives of their social circles and of the peoples of the world through the works of art they produce. Pablo Ruiz Picasso is indisputably foremost among artists who were both influenced and influential. This is because Picasso, as an artist, internalized the social problems of his time and brought them to the attention of the peoples of the world through his striking artistic language and original technique. He worked in many branches of the plastic arts and within many art movements, producing works on almost every subject and in almost every technique. Picasso, who produced works within the symbolist and surrealist movements and even pioneered them, created astonishing works throughout his life. Picasso, who was deeply influenced by symbolism before surrealism, directed his work in line with the art movement of the age through the diversity of his subjects and his technical experiments. Reflecting the dynamism required by the artistic spirit through his vast imagination and continuously developing technique, Picasso mostly placed the human being at the focus of his works. Picasso, an artist who enjoyed working, producing and constantly renewing himself, produced many works of art of various sizes. The symbolist movement, which represents the contrast between the human being and the social environment, lends universal qualities to meaningful and profound subjects. Picasso's Guernica is an example of this. Here, by depicting the horrors of war through powerful symbolic images, the artist put forward a particular artistic stance. After symbolism, Picasso came to be regarded as one of the precursors of the surrealist movement, although he was never an official member of the group. This movement, known as surrealism (or super-realism), is, according to André Breton, a way of combining the mind with what lies outside the mind. This movement, established to free the soul and consciousness, aims to reveal the absolute reality and the concept of the surreal within everyday life. In this sense, Picasso was a pioneer of the surrealist movement and produced works within it.
