Abstract
Considering that humankind has a history of two million years, human beings have throughout history perceived, analyzed and evaluated sounds, transformed them over time into a form of expression, and tried to express themselves through movements, gestures and facial expressions. At first, they established a connection between words and sounds and derived methods of communication; later, they turned to music in search of ways to train and develop the voice and, at the end of efforts and stages lasting centuries, developed vocal technique and training methods and brought them to the present day. Like every other field, music, which is of such importance in human life, has needed the support of education. This has taught people that their voices need to be trained and disciplined. Since the beginning of humanity, efforts to train the voice have been diversified by many nations through different initiatives. It can be said that the first singing (şan) studies began in the 4th century and that voice training gained even greater importance with the birth of opera in the 16th century. This descriptive study aimed to determine how voice training is taught today in different educational institutions in Turkey, how its content is determined, what its shortcomings are and what measures need to be taken. The study group consists of the institutions in which voice training is offered today, namely the music teacher education departments of faculties of education, the opera-singing and Turkish music departments of state conservatories and faculties of fine arts, while the sample consists of instructors who are experts in the field of voice training. An unstructured interview form consisting of open-ended questions developed by the researcher was used in the study. The findings revealed that in voice training courses with Western content there are few works to be sung in the mother tongue and that individual lesson hours are insufficient. It was stated that a common curriculum set by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has been established for the music departments of faculties of education and for faculties of fine arts. However, another result is that most voice educators, instead of following the curriculum, create their own educational system and train their students in the way they were trained by their own teachers. In Turkish music departments, on the other hand, there is no common curriculum for the individual voice training course and its lesson hours. It was concluded that each institution has created its own curriculum and has as many lesson hours as it has determined itself.
