Aims
SED Journal of Art Education aims to publish original research in all fields of art education, and review articles that critically assess the literature in these fields. The journal gives priority to work that fills a gap in the field and offers new, original knowledge, and that is methodologically transparent, fully referenced and ethically sound. By publishing in Turkish and English, it seeks to make knowledge produced in art education available to everyone, free of charge and permanently.
Scope
The journal publishes original articles from all theoretical, historical and applied fields of art education, from early childhood to higher education and from formal and non-formal education to special education, and from the related fields of the arts. Its main subject areas are:
- Instrumental teaching and performance studies
- Drama and performing arts education
- Visual arts education
- Museum education and cultural heritage education
- Music education
- Musicology and ethnomusicology
- The arts in special education and in the education of gifted students
- Painting, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design and the other visual arts
- Curricula, teaching methods and assessment in art education
- The education of art and music teachers
- Art and technology; digital arts and artificial intelligence
- Art history, art theory, aesthetics and art criticism
Quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research, action research, arts-based and practice-based research, analyses of works and performances, historical studies and theoretical studies all fall within its scope. Studies derived from graduate theses, or from conference papers whose full text has not been published, are considered provided that this is stated in the article.

The length and type of evaluation for each article type are given in the Author Guidelines. The journal also publishes interviews that introduce scholars and artists, and editorials on the issue or the journal.
Readership
The journal addresses researchers, academic staff and graduate students in art education and the arts, teachers of art, music and drama in schools and other institutions, artists and practitioners in cultural and arts institutions, and decision-makers who shape education policy.
Languages
Articles may be written in Turkish or English. Every article has a title, abstract and keywords in Turkish and in English. For Turkish-language articles submitted from October 2026 onwards, an Extended Abstract in English of 750–1,000 words is also required.
Outside the scope
- Studies without a scholarly research question or theoretical framework
- Studies that cannot be assessed because their method, data or sources are insufficiently reported
- Work that has been published before or is under consideration by another journal
- Opinion pieces, essays, memoirs or popular-science writing
- Descriptions of works, exhibitions, concerts or events without critical analysis
- Accounts of a lesson plan or an activity without a research framework and an evaluation
