SED Journal of Art Education is a peer-reviewed journal. Research and review articles undergo double-blind peer review: reviewers do not know the identity of the authors, and authors do not know the identity of the reviewers. Book reviews, interviews and translations are assessed by the editorial office, with the opinion of a subject expert where needed.
Stages
- Submission. The manuscript is submitted through the journal system by uploading an anonymised main text file and a separate Title Page and Author Declaration Form. No template is needed at first submission. The article processing charge is paid at submission (see Fees).
- Initial screening (up to 4 weeks). The editor checks fit with the scope, compliance with the author guidelines, anonymisation, the iThenticate similarity report, ethics approval information and the required statements. Manuscripts that are not suitable are rejected with reasons or returned to the authors for correction. Suitable manuscripts are assigned to one of the editors or to a member of the Editorial Board in the relevant field (the handling editor).
- Reviewer assignment. The handling editor invites at least two reviewers with expertise in the topic and from different institutions.
- Peer review (4 weeks). Reviewers respond to the invitation within 7 days and complete their review within 4 weeks using the online Reviewer Evaluation Form.
- Decision. The handling editor assesses the reports and makes a recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief, who makes the final decision. The decision may be accept, minor revision, major revision or reject; it is sent to the authors with reasons and the reviewer reports.
- Revision. Authors submit the revised manuscript in the Article Template (including the Extended Abstract for articles in Turkish) with a response letter that explains each change point by point. As a rule, the revision is sent to the reviewers who assessed the first version. No more than two rounds of revision are allowed.
- Acceptance and publication. For manuscripts accepted without revision, the version prepared in the Article Template is requested. Accepted manuscripts are checked for language and format by the editorial office, the authors sign the Copyright and Licence Agreement, the version prepared for publication is sent to the authors for proofreading and the article is published with a DOI in the first available issue.

Disagreement between reviewers
If the two reviewers’ recommendations differ substantially, the handling editor invites a third reviewer, or the Editor-in-Chief makes the decision and explains the reasons to the authors.
Reviewer selection and conflicts of interest
A person who works at the same institution as an author, has co-authored with an author in the last three years, is an author’s thesis supervisor or student, or has any other competing interest in the manuscript is not invited to review it. Authors may suggest reviewers at submission and may ask, with reasons, that particular people not review their work. The editor is not bound by these suggestions, and no manuscript is reviewed only by reviewers suggested by the authors.
Review reports
Reviewers assess supplementary files (data, documents, images, additional tables) as well as the main text. Review reports are not published and reviewers’ identities are kept confidential. Reports and review records are retained for at least five years after publication. Reviewers’ responsibilities are set out in the Reviewer Guidelines.
Manuscripts by editors and board members
Manuscripts by editors and board members are reviewed through the same process and handled by an editor with no conflict of interest; an editor who is an author has no access to the review records of their own manuscript (see Publication Policy).
Special issues and conference issues
Articles in special issues and conference issues go through the same process and are reviewed by at least two reviewers.
No guaranteed acceptance
The journal does not guarantee acceptance or a publication date to any author. Payment of the article processing charge does not imply acceptance.
Appeals
Authors may appeal a rejection once (see Appeals and Complaints).
Acknowledging reviewers
Reviewers receive a certificate of reviewing on request. At the end of each year, the names and institutions of the reviewers who served that year are published on the journal website.
