University Students’ Views on Elective Music Courses (The Case of Nevşehir University)

Abstract

This study was conducted in the spring semester of the 2011–2012 academic year with the aim of increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the common elective music courses taught to first-year students at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Letters, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, the Faculty of Tourism and the Semra and Vefa Küçük School of Health of Nevşehir University, in line with the students' views on these courses.

In this study, in which a total of 266 students took part, the views of the students in the sample on the common elective music courses were determined by means of a “Structured Fixed-Format Questionnaire Interview”, and the data were tabulated using frequencies, percentages, standard deviations and arithmetic means. The findings were interpreted, and recommendations were made on the basis of the results.

The study found that the students were generally interested in the common elective music courses, believed that the course was necessary even though it carried no credit, and expressed the view that it should be a credit-bearing course. In addition, various recommendations were made for extending the common elective music course and, with the support of the relevant units, making it more effective in terms of content and method.

Bu araştırma, 2011-2012 eğitim-öğretim yılı bahar döneminde, Nevşehir Üniversitesi İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi, Mühendislik ve Mimarlık Fakültesi, Turizm Fakültesi ve Semra ve Vefa Küçük Sağlık Yüksekokulu 1. sınıflarında okutulan, ortak seçmeli müzik derslerine ilişkin öğrenci görüşleri doğrultusunda bu derslerin verimliliğinin ve etkinliğinin artırılması amacı ile yapılmıştır.

Toplam 266 öğrencinin katıldığı araştırma kapsamında, örneklemi oluşturan öğrencilerin ortak seçmeli müzik derslerine ilişkin görüşleri “Yapılandırılmış Sabit Format Anket Görüşmesi” kullanılarak tespit edilmeye çalışılmış, veriler frekans, yüzde, standart sapma ve aritmetik ortalama kullanılarak tablolaştırılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular yorumlanarak ulaşılan sonuçlara dayalı olarak öneriler sunulmuştur.

Araştırma sonucunda, öğrencilerin genelde ortak seçmeli müzik derslerine ilgi duydukları, kredisiz olmasına rağmen bu dersin gerekliliğine inandıkları ve kredili olması yönünde görüş bildirdikleri saptanmıştır. Ayrıca ortak seçmeli müzik dersinin yaygınlaştırılıp ilgili birimlerce desteklenerek, içerik ve yöntem yönüyle daha verimli hâle gelmesi için çeşitli öneriler sunulmuştur.
