Abstract
The vibrato technique, which was given little importance and whose use was not favoured in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, nevertheless developed more markedly in the 19th century than in earlier centuries, and its use by performers and pedagogues increased. Consequently, 19th-century composers reflected this development in their works. Vibrato was used in different ways in each century owing to the musical needs of the period, and its use in works and methods also differed from century to century. This study aims to raise awareness of vibrato among performers, teachers and students by examining the uses, explanations and classifications of vibrato in the works and methods of 19th-century pedagogues and composers.
