Abstract
In achieving the learning outcomes of the constructivist curricula used in formal basic music education, the questions surrounding the activities are as important as the activities themselves. The aim of this study is to reveal the importance of activities such as formulating questions, asking questions and being asked questions in constructivist music education, and of the levels of these questions (lower cognitive level, higher cognitive level). The study is descriptive and was carried out using the ‘general survey’ method, one of the documentary survey methods. The study found that the act of thinking, which lays the groundwork for the construction of knowledge, is activated by questions; that teachers should try to keep the lesson, which progresses through activities, lively with questions; but that the activities of formulating and asking questions should be carried out particularly by the students. Although playing an instrument, singing a song or doing an activity aimed at musical learning in music education reflects the concepts of ‘learning by doing’, ‘activity-based learning’ or ‘hands-on learning’, such an appearance alone does not guarantee that learning will take place. Learning requires deeper approaches such as inquiry, cooperative groups and problem solving to be employed together. It was concluded that these questions should be higher cognitive level questions, particularly at the application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation levels of Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain, rather than questions with ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers, and that teachers should know that the ‘question-asking-based’, ‘inquiry-based’ and ‘question-and-answer-based’ approaches within the concept of ‘question’ differ from one another. In addition, various sample questions were developed in line with Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain for some learning outcomes selected from the primary school music curriculum currently in use.
