Abstract
The subject of harmony constitutes an important part of the courses in educational institutions that train professional musicians. This is because harmony is one of the most important elements in the formation of polyphonic music. In this course, the aim is for students to comprehend polyphonic musical formations both theoretically and aurally. In this context, classical harmony courses can be grouped in terms of content under three main headings: diatonic, chromatic and enharmonic harmony. Each of these main headings should be taught progressively in this order, and the harmonic context should be identified carefully in the analysis of works.
This study discusses enharmonic spelling and enharmonic modulation in 18th- and 19th-century Western classical music. In the introduction, the basic principles of enharmonic spelling and the enharmonic modulation technique are set out in general terms and theoretical examples are given. Repertoire examples on the subject were selected from 18th- and 19th-century works and analysed in detail. In these harmonic analyses, the scale-degree and functional harmony methods were taken into account. The symbols and abbreviations used in these methods are also explained. In conclusion, it was determined that the subject should be taught to students according to the principles of functional harmony and that a holistic approach in the musical sense should be adopted, and recommendations were made in this regard.
