Abstract
The Industrial Age in the last quarter of the 19th century led to major changes in social life. The reflection on art of the introverted effects that formed in people's inner worlds, as a result of the psychological accumulations these changes produced in individuals, gave rise to new art movements and approaches in the 20th century. In this survey-model study, the social and economic environment that gave rise to the Abstract Expressionist movement is examined, and information is given on the emergence and development of the movement, its reflections in works of art and the artists who adopted this approach in their works. Abstract Expressionist painting is grouped under headings such as “Action Painting” and “Post-Painterly Abstraction”/“Color Field Painting”. The movement involves the rejection of objects or objective forms. In particular, importance is given to the expression of introverted emotions, and a pure approach to painting is taken as the basis. Taking shape in New York between 1940 and 1950, the movement became a subject of debate owing to the striking and influential new mode of expression it brought to the international art scene. The leading artists of this approach, which is also known as the “New York School” in an America nourished by political and social change, include Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still and Barnett Newman.
