Abstract
Vibrato is an important and complex technique for almost all instruments and for the voice. In general, vibrato has become an indispensable technique for the performers in order to capture a good tone and express the music in the most powerful way. Since there is no stable and clear teaching technique, the use of vibrato becomes more complicated especially on string instruments. When the literature of string pedagogy is examined, it is seen that many technical features such as vibrato perception, speed and width are mentioned. In music technology, vibrato has been recorded in many ways and examined in terms of timbre, frequency and amplitude. The use of vibrato on the cello also differs between solo and ensemble performance. Vibrato was hardly used in Baroque works. In Classical period works, a short vibrato with few oscillations is used in certain places. In the Romantic period, vibrato appears with more frequent oscillation. In the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, known as the contemporary period, vibrato has taken on an entirely original conception. This research covers the use of vibrato technique on the cello across the periods of music history, research on vibrato, and views on teaching vibrato on the cello. The research is important for understanding and applying the ways in which vibrato technique has been used in different periods.
