Abstract

Soundpainting is a real-time composing sign language created by Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors and visual artists. When first heard of, this improvisation-based sign language does not give enough information about what kind of practice it is, which makes further explanation necessary. Understanding Soundpainting better requires practice. For this reason, it is very important to choose the right sentences when first describing Soundpainting to people. Although there is sometimes an opportunity to explain it at length, at other times it has to be expressed quickly and effectively. In such cases, these brief explanations are made through metaphors. A metaphor is a person's expression of a concept or phenomenon, as he or she perceives it, through analogies. The aim of this research is to investigate music teachers’ perception of Soundpainting through metaphor analysis. The research group consists of 40 music teachers who participated in the "1 Teacher 1000 Rhythms" project carried out by the Ministry of National Education on October 1-6, 2019 for music teachers in Rize. The music educators who participated in the study were asked to complete the statements “Soundpainting resembles…………….. Because …………………”. The content analysis technique was used to analyze the data. The analysis of the collected data yielded 31 metaphors, which were grouped into 6 categories according to their common characteristics. As a result of the research, it was found that the music educators have different views about Soundpainting as “part of real life”, “entertainment tool”, “holistic music genre/ensemble”, “expression tool”, “diversity” and “mystical element”.

Soundpainting’in daha iyi anlaşılması, uygulama yapılmasını gerektirmektedir.
