Abstract

Johannes Brahms, who is among the most important German composers in the history of Western Classical Music, lived in the Romantic period, when piano virtuosity developed. The deep, delicate and magnificent character of his piano works has given him an indispensable place among piano performers. The scherzo form, which was used in the main periods of music history, became different from previous periods in terms of length and content in the Romantic period. Brahms’s op. 4 scherzo is a showy piece on the piano that requires a good technical and musical understanding. However, this work by Brahms is not well known compared with his other works, since it is performed neither in concerts nor in vocational music education institutions. This study aims to be informative for pianists who will study Brahms’s op. 4 scherzo. At the same time, the study includes advice on the technique and interpretation of the piece and its position in the piano repertoire. As a result of the study, it was stated that a controlled touch should be exhibited throughout the scherzo, that more attention than usual is required in the use of black keys with the fifth finger, and that a beautiful touch should be exhibited for good musicality in the middle section. In addition, the differences in the scherzos composed for piano by the composers before and after Brahms in the history of music and the changes that the scherzo has undergone in the historical process are discussed.
