Abstract

Rhetoric, also known as the art of discourse, is concerned with using the most effective form of expression in a given situation. In this way, expression becomes more intriguing, aesthetic, and powerful by departing from the ordinary. The purpose of rhetorical expression is to use the most effective method of conveying the message, rather than simply transmitting it. With its capacity to strengthen expression through linguistic figures such as metaphor, metonymy, irony and pun, rhetoric is frequently used today to persuade audiences not only in verbal but also in visual language. Visual rhetoric is the use, within the discipline of rhetoric, of images within a particular concept as a means of creating meaning to give the viewer the desired message and create the desired behavior. In this context, rhetoric's aim of persuading and influencing the audience constitutes its point of intersection with graphic design. As one of the meaning-making methods to which graphic designers frequently resort, consciously or instinctively, visual rhetorical figures offer ways of conveying a message in different forms. This research, entitled “Visual Rhetoric in Logo Design”, explores how logo design makes use of visual rhetorical figures. As can be seen in the examples, one or more of the features such as semantic transpositions made by symbols, the personification of letters, alone or combined with other visual elements, and the representation of the whole by a part, which are essentially visual rhetorical figures, are used in almost every logo. As a result, it was found that visual rhetorical figures are frequently used in logo design, one of the areas of graphic design in which it is important to convey the most concepts with the least material.
