Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine examples of original and creative educational materials produced by teacher candidates within the framework of the theme of “children's rights” in the “Material Development” course. In this qualitative study, the researchers used the document analysis method to evaluate the materials that the teacher candidates had developed from an artistic and aesthetic perspective within the scope of the theme of children's rights. The materials were evaluated together with the teacher candidates, and their views on their experiences during this process were discussed as a group. The study focused on raising the teacher candidates' social awareness by informing them about the use of abstract concepts and learning outcomes, which are less preferred than the concrete concepts commonly used in preschool education. In this process, the theme to be used in the design of the materials was determined as “children's rights”. Under the supervision of the researchers, the teacher candidates carried out their designs individually or in groups, using original waste materials suited to the purpose. The teacher candidates were given time to conduct in-depth research on the theme and to share their findings. In the course, these research results were shared, and views on the sketches of the products they would make were discussed collectively. In the early years, the connections children establish with art and aesthetics will contribute to the formation of an interest in art and to the development of important skills related to art and aesthetics. For preschool teacher candidates to be able to put art and aesthetics into practice in their professional lives, receiving education with rich content on these subjects during their undergraduate studies, becoming well equipped and gaining experience are seen as an important opportunity for raising children with developed creative, artistic and aesthetic senses.
